MSDIS General News
End of Semester Goodbyes With final exams scheduled for next week, it is once again time to part ways with the interns of Team MSDIS. Brennan and Rachel provided outstanding support over the past four months, and I am grateful for their hard work. If current plans remain same, Rachel will return for another semester with MSDIS next Fall and she will be joined by several students who will officially be joining Team MSDIS after already working with me on several MSDIS-adjacent projects. I’ll provide more information about the upcoming roster as the paperwork gets signed.

Unfortunately, this is the semester we have to say a proper goodbye to Brennan, who will be starting his graduate studies next year. Brennan came to MSDIS after being enrolled in GEOG1800 and, despite having no previous exposure to ArcGIS Online, took to building interactive apps and story maps like a fish to water. His first project with us, The Physiographic Regions of Missouri, blended a love of physical geography with the narrative power of the ESRI StoryMap platform and remains one of the finest, most polished apps on the MSDIS Open Data Hub. Throughout his time with the clearinghouse, Brennan has been assigned tasks ranging from data organization to updating static maps to sitting in on surprise Zoom meetings, and he has met them all head-on, allowing me the opportunity to address larger problems, like stapling together 30 TB of 6” resolution aerial photographs. I hope you’ll all join me in wishing him the very best as he begins an exciting new phase of his education.

Missouri GIS Conference and the 2025 MSDIS Update – As always, it was wonderful to see so many friends and colleagues at the Missouri GIS Conference last month. For anyone who missed the 2025 MSDIS Update, or for anyone who caught it and really wants to see it again, I have posted a slightly modified version of the presentation on the MSDIS Reports page of the MSDIS Open Data Site. I have also added a How You Can Support MSDIS section to this monthly report, which will be a permanent fixture moving forward.

Statewide 6” Image Service – As demonstrated at the 2025 Missouri GIS Conference, a statewide mosaic of the 2023/2024 6” resolution imagery does exist and is being served out via the new Statewide Image Server. After brief discussion with several people close to the imagery project, I have decided to delay making the service available for testing to construct the final cache level. As of 8:17AM Monday 05 May, Level 18 has been building for approximately four days, covers most of the state, and weighs 3.01 TB. The advancing tile is somewhere near Sam A Baker State Park and is advancing towards Williamsville. For a reference for the speed of the construction, please see the screenshot at the end of this report.

New Image Server – Deployment of the new image server remains tied to the completion of the 6” statewide mosaic service.

AWS Open Data – After several failed attempts, I have published a draft YAML file to the AWS Open Data registry on GitHub as the next step in adding the 6” resolution imagery to the AWS Open Data Sponsorship program. I am now waiting to find out what changes I need to make to the document for it to be accepted into the main repository.

MSDIS/OGI Funding MOA – The funding discussion between MSDIS and the Office of Geospatial Information continues. I believe the current draft of the agreement is now in the hands of OGI’s legal team.

MSDIS Downtime – No downtime was reported during April 2025.

How You Can Support MSDIS

Donate Directly to MSDIS
• If you or your company would like to help support end-of-year awards for my undergraduate interns, the MSDIS Excellence Fund, is open to the public and able to accept donations. As MSDIS’ place in the world continues to rapidly expand and my attention is pulled in several different directions, my cadre of students are being asked to do more and more complex work. Even a small donation to the Excellence Fund helps provide Team MSDIS with some well-earned bagels and coffee.

Send of Letter of Support to Mizzou
• Let’s face it, Mizzou is a big place and MSDIS doesn’t have a lot of time to advertise. If you think we’re doing a good job, or even just a solidly okay job, fire off an email to the President’s Office or to the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Share Your Data With MSDIS
• MSDIS doesn’t just deal in 6” resolution imagery. If your town/city/county/regional planning committee/state agency/whatever has some cool data that can be shared with the public, send it over! If I get enough local data, I can either add a new section to the current Hub site or spin up a whole new clearinghouse just for smaller datasets.

Write Your Metadata
• All the cool kids write their metadata. Support the NG911 Data Collection • NG911 data will likely be the next great challenge for MSDIS, but it is also an incredibly important leap forward for Missouri’s GIS data catalog. If you can, please submit your data to the program.

Support Aerial Photography and LiDAR Collections
• I don’t love the idea of a whole new aerial photography collection while I’m still finishing up work on the last one, but it is impossible to overstate the value of current, high-resolution imagery and LiDAR data. If your town/city/county/regional planning committee/state agency/whatever is interested in helping support the cost of another collection, please reach out to the MGISAC.

Support MGISAC
• You came to the conference, so you might as well come to the monthly meetings! MGISAC meetings are open to anyone who wants to attend and cover a range of topics including OGI activities, data development plans, GIS-related legislation, and the occasional guest speaker. If you’re interested in attending, please email MSDIS for an invite.

Level 18 Each marker represents the easternmost edge of the tile cache at the time of review over the course of Saturday 03 May to Monday 05 May. The gaps in markers represent the overnight hours. Please note that it took so long to write this month’s update that progress has already looped back around, made it to the outskirts of St Louis Airport, and is closing in on Farmington.

Treasurer’s Report – Revenues since last report include $8,490 in conference registrations. Expenses since last report include $19,545.60 in conference hosting fees to Stoney Creek, $3,522.93 in conference-related expenses, and $227.70 in MU fees.
Our balance stands at $38,462.01. We expect the NSGIC annual membership fee to arrive in June.

Membership Report – 32 total. 2 vacancies, OA and kc water. 18 quorum.

By-laws Report – no report

Committee Reports

Data dev- discussing imagery roll out. Looking good.

911- requesting data be uploaded still. Not successful in getting more funding so no new gis funding available.

Legislative-our bill did not pass. Session is wrapped up. 65 bills got out. 19 with funding. Need to know if we want to try again.

Education – summeritis is in full swing. Happy to get feedback about students at Conference. Scholarships made it possible for so many to be there. Interested in where we go next. Educators summit went well. Engaged educators. Kicking around other ways to reach educators.

Conference-This year, we had total revenues of $35,680. We did provide refunds for one early bird registration and one half-day workshop.
An additional contribution of $250 provided by Allstate Consultants directly toward Shakespeare’s expenses is not included in that figure. Expenses for the conference totaled $25,619.13. This included $19,545.60 for Stoney Creek Inn, $837.01 for Shakespeare’s, $675.94 for the Keynote Speaker travel, $558.19 for conference supplies and awards, and $4,002.40 for credit card fees, conference office fees, and accounting fees combined. Total profit for the conference was $10,060.87.

Overall, feedback has been positive but need to put out another push for the survey since few have really been submitted. People liked the student presentations. Of the responses returned, staying in mid-Missouri was the number one response followed by going to St Louis. Sounds like internally we want to try St Louis and now is a decent time since we have money enough still to buffer the extra cost of going. Kicking around other venue options that might be more out of the box than in previous years to help with costs. There’s a large GIS presence from possible vendors in the area that could be leveraged. Need to think of more ways to bring vendor value. Dont have a big vendor response but what of those surveys have been returned the response was more luke warm about exhibit area setup and value this time around, which is interesting since it was positive last time with the only negative being needing assigned setup places, which was a suggestion we implemented this time around. Planning committee meeting tomorrow to go over debrief and general next steps.

*Elections

Chair elect- Katilin Belk
Secretary – Jennifer Bowden
Treasurer- Chris Barnett

Want to rally behind the effort to create a better understanding and more cohesive body within the council. Wanting to be more involved and get good ideas out there. We have some good momentum with getting some big statewide projects done but need to also offer outreach to other areas as well. Elected by acclimation.

Zach is now moving into chair. He is currently chair and past chair due to having to step in for Brian early.

Liaison Reports

Nsgic- GMA is out. Came out Friday. David, Tom, katilin will be meeting to start getting it filled out. GMA has been restructured. Last week there was a map accessibility webinar. Geowomen meet first Friday of the month. 3dep user group page on LinkedIn. HMA due next month.

Cooperating Agency Reports

Waiting to hear who our new census rep will be.

Nrcs- LIDAR coordinator for country can add or remove to the 3 county project that was being worked on depending on funds. Did get a response on earlier proposal that it’s funding was approved. Was wanting to fly in spring but it’s too late now. May shoot for fall. Would like to submit again for more counties. May know more by August or September.

Looking for ideas for bringing interest to the council such as socials around the state. We have non-technical users that need some tips and tricks. Lately our focus has been collaboration to get big projects done. Want to expand our offering.

Next meeting June 12. Columbia. Budget meeting.
