MSDIS Report – July 2025

New Data

A new LiDAR collection has been made available, but MSDIS has not yet had time to collect it due to our late-summer meeting schedule. Securing this dataset is very high on our to-do list.

Updated Data

MSDIS has received (but not yet published) the latest quarterly MoDOT update. These datasets will be pushed out to the Hub once our team of plucky undergraduates returns to campus later this month.

MSDIS General News

MAGIC Clearinghouse Summit
As always, it was great to see the other MAGIC clearinghouses at our annual meeting. North Dakota played host this year, and we were once again joined by a handful of non-MAGIC states. Discussions included annual state updates, ESRI licensing, different methods of collaboration with state agencies, cloud storage, LiDAR best practices, federal data sources, and a wide array of other topics.

Missouri Mappers Association Annual Meeting
This technically took place in August, but I want to include it in the report while it is still fresh in my memory. It was wonderful to be invited back to speak to local GIS professionals and update them on the current state of MSDIS and the statewide aerial photography collection. During the question-and-answer period, it became clear that there are several possible areas for outreach and training that MSDIS, OGI, and the MGISAC may want to pursue.

MSDIS/OGI Funding MOA
Despite a few early fumbles, we appear to be moving ahead with staffing faster than I expected. I have completed the hiring notices and supplemental forms to get approval for posting both permanent hires. The positions need to be approved by a newly-formed hiring committee that meets every other week before they can be posted. I believe we have advanced the process far enough that those reviews will take place on 21 August. I have received permission to begin building out our IT assets and to start hiring undergraduates. Due to meeting schedules, no progress has been made on new servers or storage, but I do have verbal commitments from the first two undergraduates that I made offers to.

AWS Open Data
I am still pursuing the AWS Open Data Sponsorship storage, but that work has taken a backseat to the funding MOA.

MSDIS Downtime
As reported last month, there was a disruption with the availability of the statewide 6” resolution dynamic service at 1:16 PM on Thursday 03 July. After restarting the service via Server Manager, the problem seemed to be resolved. This disruption did not appear to include the statewide 6” resolution cached service.

A second disruption was reported at 7:59 AM on Friday 11 July. This outage was isolated to the MSDIS Image Server (not the Statewide Image Server) and was almost certainly the result of an overnight Windows update. A server restart resolved the issue at approximately 8:34 AM.

Treasurer’s Report- annual nsgic dues $1,699.50 domains $19.99 logistics and flymoimagery. $36,762.51 balance. We have funds to do workshops.

Committee Reports

Data Dev- been a busy summer. confirmed lidar for south central Missouri. 3dep bca deadline September 12 for next year. Looking at other entities to get some other areas. St Louis area would be older at this point. Looking at how to get them covered. Really need reliable funding. The website has a dashboard we need to keep updated.

911-shawn Penman gave overview of the plethora of responsibilities she has. She does a variety of jobs in GIS in New Mexico as well as her roles on the 911 Service Board for Missouri.

Outreach- first reboot of committee meeting. Got some new folks on the call. Went over our vision and purpose. Site has been updated with latest award winners. Working on getting site updated for accessibility compliance. Looking to possibly have October meeting in st Louis. Still ironing out the host site. Lunch will be catered in. Still normal meeting date. Time might be adjusted.

Legislative- working on introducing the bill this season.

Liaison Reports

NSGIC- annual meeting coming up September 15th. Busy schedule for this one. Kaitlin, David Nykodym, Tom all going. There is a session on getting the most out of your area GIS council. Kaitlin will be presenting. Will be voting on board of directors. Kaitlin has been nominated.

Cooperating Agency Reports

USGS-bootheel lidar north side is done and available for download. South side went back for second round of corrections.

NRCS-Had enough funds left over for most of South Central Missouri. Flying this fall or spring. Projected cost is just over 5 million for 25 countries. Geographic extent might still adjust. Comes out to around 275 per square mile for ql1 lidar.
